Throughout history there are many gliders (flying without motors) that were able to take flight, but the Wright brothers are considered the inventors of the 'first sustained and controlled heavier-than-air powered flight' in 1903 (111 years ago).
Today it is possible to fly to airports around the world in jet planes that take off at speeds of 700 to 900 km/h! That is seven times faster than our cars go! The largest planes can reach 91 metres long, (nearly the length of a football field) and some can hold up to 650 people!
Along with big jumbo jets and small commercial planes, there are smaller, sleeker and faster air-crafts used mainly in the army.
